About the Topic
Recent research in ultrasonic metal welding has proven the technology as a viable additive manufacturing method. Using the combination of an ultrasonic sonotrode and a machining center, layers of metal foil are consolidated into bulk parts then integrated with advanced internal geometries and embedded sensing elements. The composite product thus boasts the metal, matrix benefits of strength and durability while including enhanced features such as conformal cooling channels, embedded strain gauges, accelerometers and other active elements.
This presentation outlines several of the manufacturing directions in which Solidica has taken their patented process and ventures into the development avenues of several, ongoing research programs. A background on the technology and its manufacturing applications will be discussed, and then specific machining and embedding strategies will be highlighted to demonstrate the versatility and strengths of the process.

About the Speaker
Grant Martin is a senior materials scientist at Solidica where he leads several UC based initiatives. His early undergraduate research in rapid prototyping at the University of Michigan led him to continue work in aluminum rapid prototyping at Solidica, where his prime focus is now on the characterization and development of the ultrasonic weld process, specifically via high resolution microscopy of the copper, magnesium and aluminum systems.
Mr. Martin is the science lead at Solidica for several ongoing, funded projects with the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy and DARPA. In his scant free time, he also runs a travel blog and captains an ultimate Frisbee team.

Seattle Chapter Sponsorship for 2009
The SAMPE Seattle Chapter is fortunate to have a strong backing from our sponsors. Sponsors provide both a financial resource as well as diversity to our organization. We ask our current sponsors to continue supporting our chapter activities during 2009. We also invite anyone interested in sponsorship of the Seattle Chapter to consider the benefits:
Interested parties should click here for Sponsorship Information or visit the Seattle Chapter Website!
-Your company advertisement will appear in the ten issues of the Seattle Chapter newsletter.
Our newsletter is distributed in a timely manner to all chapter members and sponsors with copies to the International
Business Office and other SAMPE chapters throughout the country.
-Sponsors may choose to have a tabletop display at the annual Puget Sound Materials Expo (PSME)
to be held February 24, 2009 at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.
-Your company will be listed as a sponsor on the chapter web page, www.seattlesampe.org.
If your company has a web page, we will also provide a link.

The Puget Sound Young Professionals' groups of SAMPE, ASM, and AlChe are jointly hosting an exciting event to kick off the new year in style! The event will be held at the Pramid Brewery near Safeco Field, and will feature guest speaker Laura McLaughlin from Cascade Designs, Inc. All-you-can-eat and drink specials are also included! For more information please view the flyer!.
February 14th - PSEC Engineering Fair
The Puget Sound Engineering Council's Engineering Fair will be held at the Museum of Flight on Saturday, February 14th. Bring your family and friends to this yearly event that encourages young people to pursue a career in engineering. SAMPE will have a booth with Brian Hawkins of NASA showing off some cool stuff! This event will be held in conjunction with the annual popsicle stick bridge competition sponsored by ASCE so you can also come and see how natural composite materials (wood) hold up under stress.
Volunteers are still needed for this event. If you are interested in volunteering for 1-2 hours please contact Bob Yancey. For more information please visit http://www.pseconline.org/
February 21st - PSEC Engineer of the Year Banquet
The Puget Sound Engineering Council's Engineer of the Year Banquet will be held at Palisade Restaurant on Saturday, February 21st at 5:30pm. The event will honor 2009 PSEC award winners for Academic, Industry, Government, Young, and Professional Engineers of the Year. Patrick M. Shanahan, Boeing Co. Vice President and General Manager of Commercial Airplane Programs, will be the event's keynote speaker.
